Bernard Phillips, 92 and regular face at Llanelli Leisure Centre, was invited to Canolfan Pentre Awel earlier this week to be the first member of the public to swim in its new facilities.

In a conversation with Bernard about his time at Llanelli Leisure Centre, he had this to say:

I have made some wonderful memories over the years at Llanelli Leisure Centre. Teaching people how to swim brought me immense satisfaction, I always say take your time and relax! But Llanelli Leisure Centre was more than just somewhere to go and swim, it was somewhere to go and meet people and have a laugh! I will always cherish my memories at Llanelli Leisure Centre, but I am looking forward to creating new ones at Canolfan Pentre Awel.

In 1963, Bernard was the first to enter Jubilee Pool, gaining access a day before the public after a friend linked to the project allowed friends ‘early access’ to site. Later, he assisted his relative Mike in recovering after an accident left Mike with a broken neck and paralysis.

Mike commented: “After my accident, Bernard got me back in the pool and back swimming. 29 years later, I haven’t looked back”.

Earlier in life, Bernard was a soldier, serving 2 years of National Service before serving in the Korean War, as well time served in the Merchant Navy.

Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Leisure, Culture and Tourism, Cllr Hazel Evans added:

It was a real privilege to welcome Bernard, friends and family as the first member of the public to swim in the new facilities at Canolfan Pentre Awel. Bernard’s lifelong connection to Llanelli Leisure Centre and his dedication to teaching and supporting others embodies the spirit of our community. Thank you, Bernard.
